Fishing reports from our members.
/April 27th 2025 Ft Hunter Liggett. Day after the Youth Derby. Dave, Jay and Jays grandson Colton headed on down to the lake about 6am. it was Colton’s first fly fishing trip! I have to admit I tried power bait because I saw that it did so well last year but after 2.5 hrs of nuttin’ and no one else was catching anything… except Jay and Colten on the opposite side of the Lake using prince nymphs, I picked up the o’l fly rod and went at it. By 12:30 I wrapped it up with 4 trout, 4 bass and a bluegill. Jay lost count of their catch and I only saw the bait chunkers catch a total of 4 fish all day.
April 18th-21 2025 Rancho Secco Outing Everyone seemed to have figured out this lake, Chuck found a channel by the dog run area that was productive on anything brown. Dave was also using a brown leach pattern and did very well. If you go, be prepared to have your boat inspected

April 1-6th 2024. Greg smith and Richard Higgins hosted this year’s trip to Pyramid Lake. Lo and behold some of our members caught fish!
March 12, 2022. David Gambetta, Roger Caton, William Elisade and Johnathon Foresman headed to O’Niel forebay. Although the day was just gorgeous, The fishing stunk… they were to deep and just not active yet

November 14, 2020.
Six club members gathered at the Maderos side of the forebay. The morning was clearing after the storm front passed the evening before. Roger, Bill, Pete and Fred F. fished out of float tubes around the islands. Pete had one on and lost it in the morning around 9am. Roger picked one up later to the east towards the west.
Greg and Richard fished from Greg’s boat. Around 9:15 am, they hit a school of stripers in 12 feet of water just above the submerged weed beds in the channel between the islands. Greg brought two in the boat and Richard brought one in. They had three fish shake off at the boat and many strikes. The bite turned off about 9:45 am. Later in the afternoon @ 1:30 pm, by check 12, found another school of stripers in about 12 feet of water and got two more strikes. Greg was able to bring two more into the boat. The bite was on for about 20 minutes before it turned off
The rigs of choice were 7wt and 9wt rods, 300 grain sink lines and using the San Luis Smelt pattern in size 2/0. The fish turned on when the breeze picked up in both locations. The biggest fish was about three pounds and was picked up at the islands in the morning. The group was off the lake at 2:00 pm. Here are some photos:
November 15, 2020. Freddy Farias, Wilson Taguinod, and Brendon Taguinod fished Los Padres Reservoir on the last day of the season and were not disappointed. Freddy (a newcomer to float tube fishing) started the day with a rainbow early in the morning. The fishing was not hot, but with perseverance the numbers added up. Freddy ended up with 4 up to 12″, Brendon had 10 to 16″, and Wilson had 13 to 14″. A good way to close the season. Here are a couple of photos:
November 26-29, 2020. Wilson Taguinod and his son Brendon braved the elements in an attempt to get one last outing to Crater Lake. After driving 5 miles through 6-8″ snow, they were stopped 2 miles short of their destination. The road to Silver Lake was more forgiving – it was only a half mile drive before we had to turn back. We got stuck and had to dig ourselves out. We ended up at Eagle lake and had to set up camp and cook after dark.
Fishing was slow but the quality was high. Wilson landed 7 nice rainbows from 17 to 21 inches and Brendon landed one 20+. Here are some photos of the pigs we caught:
December 11-12, 2020. Wilson and Brendon couldn’t resist the temptation and made a final trip to Eagle Lake with a stop at Lake Almanor on the way. We caught 21 planted German Browns which were all cookie cutters between 12 and 15 inches and decided to move on to the Eagle Lake Rainbows. Fishing was slow with only 3 fish landed on Saturday but they were beauties. A storm blew us off the lake Saturday afternoon and cut our trip short one day. Here are some photos:
December 26, 2020. It was a good turnout for the post Christmas Salinas River outing with Chuck, Jay, Freddy, Fred De, Greg, Pete, Wilson and his son Brendon eager to end the year with some striper action. Alas, the stripers did not cooperate and only one fish was landed as of 12:00 (a 24 incher by Fred DeYoung). Despite the slow fishing, a friendly and jovial banter could be heard on the water as good friends gathered to enjoy their passion for fly fishing.
March 15-19, 2021. Six eager fishermen ventured to Pyramid Lake in search of the elusive 20 pound Lahontan Cutthroat. Fishmaster Richard Higgins was accompanied by Greg Smith, our intrepid leader Gene Tsukamoto, Freddie Farias, Roger Caton and Wilson Taguinod. Unfortunately, a weather system came in and blew off the cloud coverage and turned off the bite. There were 5 fish caught by the whole group in 3 days of fishing.
April 24, 2021. Freddy Farias hooked up with Susan and Wilson Taguinod to fish Los Padres Dam on opening day. The fishing was slow and the quality was lacking with a mixture of steelhead and rainbow smolts up to 9 inches caught. Wilson landed 9, Susan 4, and Freddy came close to a couple of nicer fish but he lost them. Hot flies were BHFBPT’s, guides choice hares ears, and amber wing prince nymph.
April 25, 2021. Despite the meager results on opening day, Wilson returned to Los Padres with his son Brendon to find more of the same. Wilson landed 10 with the biggest 11″ and Brendon landed 9 up to 9″. Word trickled down that steelhead were being caught up the river.
July 23-25, 2021. Thus far it has been a slow year on the water for our members. Fred DeYoung and Wilson Taguinod chanced a 3 day trip to Northern California to test their luck with high mountain Rainbows. Friday afternoon found them on Manzanita lake with no fish landed. Fred had a nice fish break him off and Wilson lost two nice fish in the weeds but it was slow going the whole afternoon. Saturday on Crater lake proved to be the elixir to cure our joneses with 60+ fish landed for the day! They ate anything we presented but were particularly fond of a size 8 stimulator. Sunday was the icing on the cake, however. We were guided on the Fall River by Jay Cockrum and landed 30+ quality rainbows from 12-20″. Here are some photos:
